Permission Error Message

L

Linda

I have been using FP 2002 for over a year to publish my
one website. Publishing has been no problem until
tonight. I get a FrontPage error message that informs me
that I "do not have permission to perform this
operation. Ask your web site administrator to change
your permissions and then try again, or log on with a
user account that has this permission." Well, I have no
website adminstrator other than me and I have only one
account and it has been just fine until now. Any ideas?
Thanks--

If this happen when you are opening your local copy of your web or when you are trying to open or
publish your site to a remote server?

If it is a remote server, then you need to contact your web host.

Can you open the online web in FP?

| This happens when I try to publish edited/added pages to my website via a remote server. I have checked with my web host and they
tell me everything is OK on their end. It's as if somebody has flipped a switch and will not let me publish anymore. Do you
suggest I contact them again?

This will tell us and you if the extensions are configured correctly on the remote server.

Yes

You need to find out if you can get into your online web in FP to decide if it is a publishing problem on your hosts Server or on
your PC

since February 2003 with the same web host) that changes could occur in the FP extensions that could be causing this problem?

I have imported my existing website from the web into a new FP file on my PC. It looks fine for the most part. Everything imported. There are some stray characters like this >; but it's all intact--

You need to open the site directly in FP via File Menu | Open Site and enter the URL to your site as
http://www.yourdomain.com, then your login info.

Looking at your host Control Panel, just indicates that extensions have been installed, but will not
indicate if they are configured correctly.

We didn't "ask" you to import it
- But does that mean you were able to open it online in FP?
- If so did you try to Publish it (File Publish) to a new disc based web to see if you got any errors

Ok, you can open the site directly in FP, this indicates the permissions are set correctly for
accessing via FP.

With the site open on the remote server in FP, open your local copy in FP and then publish to the
remote server.

Please provide the exact content of any error messages.

Have you forgotten about me??!!! I still need help!!!!
I did as you suggested below and it opens just fine. Now what? In the meantime, I have
uninstalled and re-installed FP 2 times. No effect. I REALLY don't know what to do next.

Well, now it won't open and here's the error message I get:

"Server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "service.cnf". Please check the file permissions."

Thomas, Here are some other things you need to know that were performed by my website host provider today:
1. They reinstalled my FP extensions on my account. That didn't work. I got the same original permission-denial warning PLUS a new error message:

Server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "service.lck". Please check the file permissions.

I e-mailed this info to them.

2. They e-mailed me stating the problem had been resolved. However, when I tried to publish, this is the error message I got, the same one I got when trying to do what you told me to:

Server error: The server extensions were unable to access the file "service.cnf". Please check the file permissions

I e-mailed this info to them.

3. Now they are telling me that my "FP installations have been corrupted. Please confirm it from your side. If so will uninstall and reinstall it." Well, I don't know how to confirm it and I don't know if they are asking me to uninstall and reinstall FP or if they are going to uninstall and reinstall something. I've e-mailed them and reminded them that I have already uninstalled and reinstalled FP twice.

Just wanted you to have all the information--

When you get there, I want you to know that there used to be some custom link buttons on the left-hand side to navigate about the web site. They are now gone because, I'm guessing, of attempts on the part of my website host provider to correct the problem. But you can navigate some of the site by the "NewsFlash" hyperlinks near the top. Also gone is a common border that was at the bottom of each page. Also, the hit counter has been reset to 1 and will not advance. And, finally, I had a "slide show", using the Marquee feature, of 9 dog pictures. That no longer works. I'm assuming that when this problem is fixed and I can publish again, all of these features will be restored by virtue of my publishing what I have on my harddrive.
