In general, i865 and i875 chipset based motherboards support dual channel
operation for greater bandwidth if you have installed your memory as pairs
of identical modules -- but do not require it and will operate with a single
module installed.
Success with non-Intel chipset based boards may vary; I don't know about
those.
Hyper treading function of the P4 has nothing to do with RAM memory, so you
can use only one memory module, ore you can use as many as your system
supports.

As others have noted, the number of sticks of ram you *need* to use to make
a system work at all is not related to your processor supporting
hyperthreading or not. From this point of view, a Pentium 4 is a Pentium 4
is a Pentium 4.
However, many of the modern chipsets which support hyperthreading also have
an additional *unrelated* feature that improves memory performance if you
use 2 sticks of ram rather than just one. If your computer uses one of these
chipsets, I would tend to use pairs of matched memory where possible.
