For the most part Bill is correct, check with the manufacture. As a general
rule with a p4 processor (which indicates that your motherboard is of the
newer nature) you can add single sticks of memory (ddr), as you want to
do.In the past with older motherboards it was required that you install
memory in sets 2, this is no longer required except in the case of Rambis
memory.
For the most part there are either two or 4 ddr slots on a motherboard,
for example my machine has four and i can expand it to four gigabytes (all
boards are different).
The biggest thing to watch for and make sure of it the proper
memory-meaning, ddr pc2100, ddr pc2700, etc. You can put slower memory in a
faster slot but you can not put faster memory in a slower slot.

Who told you that?

Many times today you can find memory that is compatible with both. What I
mean is, lets say you have a board that supports pc 2100 ddr, and you go and
purchase by mnistake ddr pc3200, on some boards including all the ones I have
worked on latley there were major issue. Now the opossite is viable
meaning if you out pc2700 in a pc3200 slot it work but i dont know why you
would want to do that. Thats what I mean. Now lately I have been see much
memory that is backwards compatible (or is that forwards compatible). Such
as pc 2100/2700 etc, many systems have the problem when the memory speeds are
reported.
Now there are some chip sets that actually will accept either, since I dont
work on memory issues with many newer systmes, i.e the chipsets on AMD
Athlon/Duron motherboards allow the RAM bus to run at a different speed from
the processor bus.

A good site for memory is crucial.com. Just tell it your PC make/model & it
will tell you what is compatible & their memory is guaranteed to work in your
system.

You may want to consult the manual coming along with your computer/
mobo.

If you're not familiar with the ESD guidelines (Electrostatic Sensitive
Devices), take the entire system to a computer shop/technician. Other-
wise, there is a high risk to damage the RAM modules and/or the mobo.

It should, just make sure the speed of the chips are the same (i.e.) if
you have PC2700 @ 256Mb You'll want to put in PC2700 @ 512Mb also.
