Peculiar glitch with XP and USB devices

I own a new Dell 2400 computer running XP Home Edition. I have two
USB devices installed, a Creative PC-CAM camera and Visioneer 5800 scanner.
Both have the latest drivers installed and are supposed to be XP compatible.
I noticed that after running a thorough CheckDisk, those two devices will
not work. I find yellow exclamation points in Device Manager for them, and
Windows cannot load the scanner software.

However, if I reboot the computer, that fixes the problem. Everything
loads fine. I'd like to know why those two devices malfunction after a
CheckDisk. Any ideas?

I've had the exact same problem since installing SP1 on two XP Professional
machines with very different hardware configurations. The only solution
I've found is to replace the updated usbhub.sys file with the original. The
updated file provides USB 2.0 functionality, so you'll lose that by making
the switch. If there's a better solution I'd like to hear it.

Rather than reboot you might try:

Break/make the USB connections.

In Device Manager disable/enable the problem devices.

Either method works here.
