i recently bought a Toshiba laptop from pcworld, it was an ex display model
with windows xp, after using it for a few months my friend informed me that
pcworld had not performed a clean install of windows xp before selling me
the laptop and that there were a lot of things left on it from when it was
being displayed, i want to make some repairs and perhaps do a clean install
as i am having a few problems but the only discs i had with the system are
the Toshiba drivers and Microsoft Works

should i of had a windows xp disc
should pc world have performed a clean install

any help much appreciated as i have been back to pc world and explained the
problem and they said they would have to charge me to perform a clean
install or for me to do it myself - but i dont have the disc

The vendor is required to do one of three things to allow the user to
reinstall windows:

1. Provide a windows installation CD

2. Provide a recovery CD

3. Provide a hidden recovery partition on the hard drive. With this
choice often times there is a program you can run to create a recovery
CD from the hidden partition.

Seems like PCworld did option #3. Call their tech support and find out.
