i recently bought a Toshiba laptop from pcworld, it was an ex display model
with windows xp, after using it for a few months my friend informed me that
pcworld had not performed a clean install of windows xp before selling me
the laptop and that there were a lot of things left on it from when it was
being displayed, i want to make some repairs and perhaps do a clean install
as i am having a few problems but the only discs i had with the system are
the Toshiba drivers and Microsoft Works

should i of had a windows xp disc
should pc world have performed a clean install

any help much appreciated as i have been back to pc world and explained the
problem and they said they would have to charge me to perform a clean
install or for me to do it myself - but i dont have the disc

I would very politely return to PC World and explain to the good folks that
your Laptop was not supplied together with the factory restore disks.

Toshiba supply System Recovery CDs that you can use to reinstate the Laptop
to a 'factory fresh' state.

This would wiper out everything on your hard drive and recreate the system
back to original state.

You cannot perform a 'clean install' using these disk, however you achieve a
near identical result. The difference is merely one of symatics in most
instances.

Should they baulk at providing these disk, call Toshiba and complain LOUDLY,
they may just find it in their hearts to provide a replacement set. You'll
need to identify the XP product key; generally supplied on a sticker attached
to the underside of your laptop. Without this, then you'll defiinitelly need
to get a full retail version of XP.

Now again, go back to PC WOrld and complain: the value to you was a PC with
Windows XP and the licence to use and reinstall it. No recovery CDs, no XP
product key and you have been 'short changed' big time. They will have to
make good for you with a copy of XP; no ifs, ands or buts.

Did you speak to an Assistant or the Store Manager? Have you considered
contacting the Computer Active magazine? Are you sure there is not a backup
copy of Windows XP on your hard disk?

Andrew;
Check your invoice and manual to verify what you should have received.
Some computer manufacturers restore Windows from a hidden partition on
the hard drive drive.
Check your manual, contact the store and Toshiba for details.

For some companies, after 30 days, you options dwindle and get more
expensive for missing components.
Be polite but insistent when you talk with them and possibly you will
get what you need assuming you are actually missing something.

I know it does not help you but never again buy anything computer
related from PCWorld! They are not professional - they are shifters of
stuff.

Some time ago I was setting up a friends computer and needed a new modem
lead and the only nearby shop was PCWorld. I went through five of their
leads before they'd accept that they had a duff batch. I watched the guy
put the rejects back on the shelf and I had to argue with the store
manager before the whole batch were removed from sale.
