My PC wil restart at random times while playing full screen games, but at no
other time, and when it is finished with the reboot it will give me and error
message saying i need to update the driver for my internal smartlink dial-up
modem(which i don't use... i have cable modem) or install sp2(which i did
months ago).
I tried updating the driver- didn't stop it.
I tried uninstalling the modem- didn't stop it.
Tried several other things...(like holding a gun to my PC's head and
demanding it work or else!!) ... didn't work.

Please advise....

What kinds of games? Maybe a couple of names will give someone a clue?

Is it possible the game is trying to use the modem for something online?

It is also possible there's a video driver problem, perhaps a bad IRQ or
other hardware conflict. How are your video card drivers?

You say internal modem, do you mean internal as in you could take it out or
internal as built into the motherboard? Maybe removing it is a way to find
out. If nothing out a reinstall might clear up an iRQ conflict.

I'd certainly wait to see if anyone else comes up with something more
positive, but good luck, these things can sometimes be very elusive.

Ronin, are you overclocking your CPU or Graphics Card? Your Ram settings
in the Bios maybe to Aggressive. Back off
those if you can. No overheating problems? Power Supply have enough
Wattage for your system? Just a few thoughts.

Sims2 and Children of the Nile are the two games that i've noticed it on.
Children isn't horribly graphics intensive and i updated all the video
drivers just in case with no effect on the problem.

The hard drive temp is consistently 130-131F... which i beleive is right at
max tolerable.

I even un-installed the modem, thinking that might help. but it did not.

the only upgrades i've done to my comp are installing ati radeon9250 and
adding 256mb ddram. both of which have been running fine for at least 6months.

Ronin,
I have the same problem excpt mine does not have to be playing a game. It
really doesn't matter what I am doing. It will go a while without doing it
and then it will do it three ot four times a day. It wants a SmartLink
Update everytime and I have a NetoDragon Modem. Mine has been doing it for
years and I use to send in the error reports but have quit because it does no
good. Microsoft has never responded or as far as I can tell tried to fix the
problem.

I saw someone with a similar complaint about a particular game, and it seems
that was the game, but obviously one thinks first of modem drivers if no
specific software is involved...

Does your show up as okay in device manager?

If so maybe physically removing it is the only answer.
