I'm running windows XP new installation, with ZoneAlarm Firewall, antivirus
AV and Norton, I was able to install all of these programs with no problem,
but when I run any of the antivirus the computer shuts down by itself??,
other problem is when I transfer files that are saved on my hard drive to be
atttached to a e-mail message, the same thing happens, do you think that I
have to upgrade my hardware? or there is something else going on.

Thank you.

Are you running two anti-virus programs? You state AV and Norton. If you
are, they very likely are in conflict with each other.

Dump Norton if you have ZA firewall/antivirus program.

Norton IMHO is the worst resource hog and the worst support of nearly
any program ever written. Capable of messing up email program settings
in a single bound, faster at messing up your system than a speeding
bullet. Cannot be stopped even by an uninstall routine! It's Super
Norton! More registry entries than stars in the universe! LOL

Thank you for your prompt response, but before I had installed Norton I tried
to scan my pc with AV and the same happened, the computer kept on shutting
down. Right now I have no AV program on my pc only Norton and it shutted down
by itself while defragmenting it or scanning the system for viruses, I have
even tried on a "Safe Mode" and same result.

Thanks again.

Hi Chapin,

To determine what driver is causing the problem I need you to enable driver
verifier.
Steps:
1) Windows Key + R
2) Type in 'verifier' and hit enter
3) Make sure 'Create Standard Setting' is selected and hit next
4) Click on 'Select all drivers installed on this computer' and hit Finish
5) Reboot

There is a possibility that your computer will crash on reboot. If this
occurs hit F8 when rebooting just before the windows logo screen and select
the safe mode boot option. Follow the same steps above but on step 4 choose
'Select driver names from a list'; hit next; check the box next to any
driver where the provider is not Microsoft; hit Finish; reboot.

This will slow the performance of you computer a little while enabled but
will hopefully catch the driver causing corruption. Next time you crash
the blue screen will hopefully say something like
"DRIVER_VERIFIER_DETECTED_VIOLATION". If this occurs please send the
corresponding minidump (by default it is at c:\windows\Minidump ) my way.
If you have any questions or I didn't explain something well enough don't
hesitate to e-mail me back. Good Luck,
