PC shuts down unexpectedly

I've faced the following problem: yesterday I started Norton Spyware scan
which then was checking computer for spyware for about five hours. During
that time I was typing documents so the the processor worked for full power.
After seven hours of such work the computer shut down unexpectedly though
everything was fine.
Today I have been sufing the internet (for about 10 minutes) and downloading
Norton Antivirus updates when suddenly my computer has shut down again. I've
started it and surfed the internet again and the same problem has occured.
Windows Update has stopped working though it is enabled.
I wonder is it a problem with windows or my computer. Could it be
overheating?
Can anyone help me to resolve this problem?
Oh, I've forgot to mention I've got laptop computer Toshiba Satellite with
windows XP Home Edition (SP1). Intell pentium III processor 1,10 Ghz

Thanks in advance!

Make sure that you have the latest BIOS installed. The Toshiba Satellite
model 1800 had this problem when it was introduced. My recollection
is that they went through about 10 BIOS updates before it was fixed.
You should also make sure that the fan openings are not clogged with dust.
Also make sure that the fan is running and speeds up when the CPU chip is
under load.

I updated the BIOS a few years ago but only now this problem has appeared
again. And beside the BIOS updating can cause new problems to appear (I've
read somewhere about this). I've checked my fan and it is OK.
Do you think that all the problem is in the bios?
Another person advised me to replace the mainboard.

Thanks, I'll try it.

Rt. click "my computer" click on the advance tab, under "startup and
recovery" click the settings button, find the heading "system failure" now
uncheck the box that says "automatically restart" ok your way out.
More that likely this will stop your shutdown if it does not the next time
it happens you will get a blue screen with a bunch of numbers like
0x0000001E
Write these numbers down exactly has they appear and repost the here.

sorry for posting on someone else’s thread but I have little time before this
notebook shuts down again.

I have had the same problem, cpu temp ok, and windows just shuts down
without warning and randomly.

Last shutdown brought up a blue screen with this.

A problem has been detected & windows has been shut down to prevent damage
to your computer.

If this is the first time you’ve seen this stop error screen, restart your
computer. If this screen appears again, follow these steps.

Check to sure you have adequate disk space. If a driver is identified in the
stop message, disable the driver or check with the manufacturer for diver
updates. Try changing video adapters.

Check with your hardware vendor for any BIOS updates, disable BIOS memory
options such as caching or shadowing, restart your computer, press F8 to
select advanced options and then select safe mode.

When I managed to get the computer working again a windows dialogue box came
up with this.

What changes have you made to hardware and software immediately prior to
the problem occurring?

Are there any yellow question marks in Device Manager? Right click on
the My Computer icon on your Desktop and select Properties,
Hardware,Device Manager. If yes what is the Device Error code?

Try Start, Run, type "sigverif.exe" without quotes and hit OK. What
drivers are listed as unsigned? Disregard those which are not checked.

What is your Windows XP CD as it is described on the face of the CD?

There are no yellow questions.

The following drivers are unsigned:
atapi.sys (modified 04.08.2004) version "none"
tvald.sys (modified 18.08.2001) version 2.0
tvaldx.sys (modified 18.08.2001) version 2.0
What does this mean?

I have Windows XP Home Edition SP2

G

Gerry

I cannot see any problem with the unsigned drivers. Two are because it
is a Toshiba.

Are these the precise words on the face of the CD "Windows XP Home
Edition SP2"???

This freeware programme is excellent for getting information about
your computer:
Everest Home Edition (freeware)
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download4181.html

Tip: To copy select Report, Quick Report, Plain Text, highlight
required text, right click and select copy. However, whilst this is
fine for posting small amounts of information into newsgroup messages
longer reports will irritate other newsgroup subscribers.

In Everest expand Motherboard, Chipset and post the details for each
Memory slot.

Also try running HD Tune(freeware).

Download and run it and see what it turns up.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy
to Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Also do a full surface
scan with HD Tune.

What is the temperature given for the drive in HD Tune?

Thanks for the info of my hard drive!

HD tune doesn't give me the temperature for my hard disk. It seems that my
hard drive doesn't support this function. :(

The fan (it seems that there is only one because it's a laptop) is working
fine. It speeds up (when the CPU temperature increases) and slows down (when
the CPU doesn't work hard).

I've got Toshiba Satellite 5005-S504. I bought it in 2001. Pretty old, isn't
it?

Yesterday I ran HD tune error scan and found no damaged sectors. Everything
is green.
But when I put after that my pc into hibernation and turned it on after some
time it showed me the error message (white letters on a black background)
before reading the restoration data. I don't remember the exact words but in
general the message said that there was a read error when reading restoration
data. It suggested to delete the restoration data and to proceed with the
booting (this was the only available option). After this everything was OK.
I faced this error for the first time so I wonder if it is somehow connected
with HD Tune error scan. What do you think?
By the way the system bios is more than two years old. I don't think that
Toshiba has a newer bios. I searched their site last year and found only 2002
version. Should I install third-party bios (if any exists)? Where it can be
found beside eSupport?
