Hello!
I have two PCs. One for the every day stuff and one for burning my pics to
CDs and downloading photos from my Camcorder. It's the second one that's not
well. Everything was fine until about two weeks ago when I switched it on and
waited for it to boot up. It got as far as the 'Microsoft XP' loading screen
and then just stops. The words on screen have vertical black lines running
thru them, what could be causing this? The computer itself is about four
years old.

That's typically the sign that your video card is damaged - usually from
overheating - and needs to be replaced.

A few things you could try:
1. Swap monitors. Same thing happen when the other monitor is attached to
the old computer?
2. Swap video cables. Same thing happen when the other video cable is
attached to the old computer?

If the answer to both is 'yes' it's time for a new video card.

Hey Ted
Thanks for your reply :). I shall try them and let you know if that sorted
the problem

In addition to what Ted Zieglar suggested, you might also try booting up in
SAFE MODE by activating the F8 key during boot.
Good luck!
