PC crashes whilst running Windows Memory Diagnostic

W

Winny

Hello all,

My pc has recently been having problems, initially found during video
rendering but now apparently random crashes make me think things are
getting worse. I have put some info about my system at the end of this
post.

I can run the Prime95 torture test for 12 hours without a problem.

I can run Memtest86+ ok also.

However when I try to run Windows Memory Diagnostic it always fails at
the same point - the computer just hangs so I don't get an error
message, just a frozen screen with some of the top lines corrupted. It
fails very early in the 4th test, I suspect at the exact same point
each time. I can't recall the name of this test, but it's the one
dealing with testing using a chess board grid of squares of data.

Any ideas on what part of my machine is failing this?

Many thanks for any help.

My pc: Motherboard:
Gigabyte GA-7VT600-1394 KT600 DDR400 400fsb x8AGP.
Athlon XP 3200+, 2.21 GHz
Memory: (original)
512 MB DDR SDRAM PC 2700 (DDR 333)3

Memory recently upgraded to: 1.5GB RAM (using Crucials recommended
compatible memory)

Hard Drive:
120 GB 7200 rpm, 8 MB cache UDMA Hard Disk
Graphics: (original)
GeForce FX 5200 with 128 MB of RAM

Graphics (recently installed):
PNY GeForce 7600GS AGP 8x with 256MB RAM

The above upgrades were made becasue my original problem was crashing
during video rendering using Studio 11.1.

You do not give details of the new RAM save for the ammount.

PassMark BurnInTestT is a software tool that allows all the major
sub-systems of a computer to be simultaneously (or independently)
stress tested for endurance, reliability and stability. It looks like
running the Graphics test would be a good place to start in your case.

What Error / Warning reports ( if any ) appear in the System log in
Event Viewer when you last booted the machine?

Please post copies of all Error and Warning Reports appearing in
the System and Application logs in Event Viewer for the last boot. No
Information Reports or Duplicates please. Indicate which also appear in
a previous boot.

You can access Event Viewer by selecting Start, Control Panel,
Administrative Tools, and Event Viewer. When researching the meaning
of the error, information regarding Event ID, Source and Description
are important.

HOW TO: View and Manage Event Logs in Event Viewer in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308427/en-us

Part of the Description of the error will include a link, which you
should double click for further information. You can copy using copy
and paste. Often the link will, however, say there is no further
information.
http://go.microsoft.com/fw.link/events.asp
(Please note the hyperlink above is for illustration purposes only)

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Thanks Gerry - will investigate your suggestions tonight.

Last night I did more testing:

Passmark Burn-in test ran ok apart from once when it crashed the pc
requiring the reset button. I tried Passmark with various combinations
of tests on and off, and several times with everything running
(including 2D and 3D graphics and video playback).

I ran Windows Memory Diagnostic again and got my usual crash part way
through the Stride6 test. However before going to bed I ran it again
with the cache option off. It was still running before leaving for
work this morning but had got well beyond the Stride6 and was nearing
completion of the 6th and final test with no errors so far.

Could it be a cache problem? I don't understand how caching works.

Thanks for your help and suggestions guys.

two cents: it sounds to me like either a heat or power issue. adding the
extra mem may have pushed you beyound the limits. I would try a few
things: get a temp monitor program that's compatable w/ your MoBo and
take a look at the temps. If temps are fine, and if your MoBo allows it,
bump up the voltage to the ram by 1 tick (typically .25 volt). Note that
will cause a bit more heat tho.

Memtest86 saying it passes is good, but it may be just on the edge. When
in doubt let memtest86 run for 24 hours, box closed so cooling is normal.
While this will stress the ram it won't stress the PowSup, so if it passes
just fine then I'd definately start leaning toward a power issue.

What kind/size of power supply is in the box? You might want to go over
the MoBo and all the power connections; removing and reseating them can
wipe oxide off the pins and "clean" things up. In my experience many a
flakey box has been fixed by swapping in a new good-brand PS (not a
no-name!).

unload the user's profile because a program was referencing the user's

Hi,

The CPU seems to run around 58 deg C, if I start up Passmark's Burn-In
program then it varies between 61 and 63, with a brief peak at 65 when
I was dragging the tower out of it's desk compartment. No problems
there, though I don't know what constitutes a dangerously high temp
anyway, but it didn't crash or hang.

I haven't fiddled with the volts yet.

The power supply is an Eagle DR B350ATX with 350W output in total. Any
good?

I have just been experimenting with Passmark Burn-In, running with and
without writing to C: as an option as I was wondering if this had
anything to do with the problem. It has crashed twice when writing to
C and not crashed when not. But the last crash occurred when the temp
was only 58 deg C so perhaps this rules out a temp issue?

Maybe then I should try tweaking the volts as suggested - if so, how
do I do it?

Many thanks.

I need Reports from the last boot only and for you to tell me whether
they have occured before as investigating an error occuring once is not
a good use of time. Some errors occur once (sometimes more than once)
during a session but do not occur again after the computer is restarted.
It is the repeating errors that need looking at. Also make sure all
error reports contain date and time as the sequence of events can offer
pointers as to the underlying problem.

Dear all,

Update:

I have had similar Stride6 failures in Windows Memory Diagnostic
regardless of whether I have just my original 512MB, the new 1GB, or
both inserted. Onoly once have I completed Stride6, this was with just
the 512MB RAM inserted. however on the second pass through the series
of tests it failed on Stride6.

I have cleaned out the inside of the case and de-fluffed the fan.

I have had crashes requiring resets with a CPU temp of 58 deg C, but
have run Prime95 for several hours with CPU between 69 - 72 deg C.

Prime95 torture test (option for CPU, L2 testing but not much RAM)
completed several times but eventually crashed the pc during the
night.

Such crashes listed above left no error or warning messages in the
error logs.

Having read a lot of posts on various boards I am coming to the
conclusion that it is a CPU or mobo issue - any way to tell which one?
I am happy to buy and fit a new CPU if necessary.

Many thanks for any suggestions.

Hi Gerry,

My motherboard details etc are at the start of the thread.

Another update - tonight I looked inside my PSU and found evidence of
corrosion and leakage around a capacitor. I bought a new PSU but
unfortunately it has made no difference - I still get failures on
Stride6 and when running Pinnacle Studio 11.1 which was my original
problem. Voltages do look better in Bios or Motherboard Monitor (eg 5V
is now 5V and not 4.7) now though.

It's getting a bit expensive - so far I've invested in new RAM, a new
GPU and now a new PSU. I suspect my next purchase might be a new
CPU...
