Thanks to US Robotics and their crappy PCI V92 Modem
which I have now thrown out, my XP Pro system is totally
screwed up. I want to reformat and start from scratch. I
do not want to go through the effort and time of
downloading 200MB of patches and updates so I would like
to retieve and save them to a CD. I opened and installed
them from the download. First, can I do this? and
secondly, where are they stored on my system? Also Where
is the driver file located on the XP CD?
Your help is appreciated.
Thanks Peter B.

First, and this may not make you feel any better, you should go and get the
PCI V92 modem out of the garbage can and return it to the place where you
bought it. Do not slay the witless cashier or manager of the store where
you bought it. It may simply be a defective modem. If you're pissed off,
be pissed off at the right people: U.S. Robotics.

Don't just reformat. It's such a huge time investment. Sure, it leaves
your system clean and pristine, but it's such a laborious process.
Consider just doing a "repair" installation.

Search your hard-drive for a WUTemp folder. It may have the updates from
the Microsoft Windows Update site. Or, search your computer for Q*.* with
the Search System Folders and Search Hidden Files and Folders boxes
checked. Often, update installation files begin with Q and a numeric
value. Just copy or move them to a new folder, then burn that folder to
CD-ROM.

Conveniently, the Microsoft Windows Update site allows you to get
"redistributable" versions of the updates. While you're at the site, in
the left-hand windowpane, click on the link to personalize Windows Update.
In the right-hand windowpane, click inside the checkbox that has the line
"Display the link to the Windows Update Catalog" beside it.

Click the Save Settings button.
Then, back under the See Also subsection in the left-hand windowpane of the
Windows Update site page, click the link to the Windows Update Catalog.
This will cause the Windows Catalog to become available in the right-hand
windowpane. From there, you can get at the "redistributable" updates. Once
you download them, you can happily burn them to CD-ROM.

If you have a 56kbps modem (as opposed to a cable or DSL connexion to the
Internet), you may want to have a friend with a fast connexion download the
updates for you on his/her computer. Or, go to a local community college
campus (which often have publicly useable computers with broadband and a
CD-burner) and use their computers to get and burn the "redistributable"
updates to CD-ROM.
