Password protect folders and files

Hi. I don't seem to be able to locate a free program that allows you to
password protect folders or files. Thing I'm running at the moment is
Password Protect which has a 30 day frre trial, after that it's $39.95. Does
the job, when you protect, the folder icon changes with a no-entry sign
added. It is a bit pricey IMO. There is something called File Vault which
is free, but I'm not sure whther to bother with this. Thanks if you know of
a free program that works like Password Protect.

If you are using Windows XP, you could create a compressed (Zip) folder,
then password protect it.

For extra security you could encrypt your folder.

Alternatively, you could hide your files inside a bitmap picture.

Thanks.

I'm actually running windows 98SE.

I've got this feeling though that I don't need encryption. I don't think
Password Protect is sold as encryption software, but I could be wrong.
What's so good about Password Protect is you don't create special
innacessible foldersm vaults, or drives on your HDD, you just password
protect your regular folders. I don't think this is encyption as such.

Just curious - on the download page of this program the following software
is also listed:

" !CREDIT CARD GENERATOR 4.0

Generates/Validates Credit card Numbers. Note that this program should
be used for educational purposes only."

What purpose is served by such a program except for
fraud?

I use FolderAccess 2.0. It's liteware and locks up to four folders, but
works just fine. I think I tried Lock Folder 5.0 a few months back and
couldn't get it to work on my XP Home machine ...

At a guess I would suspect that it could be of use to create "dummy"
data to test an accounting, database, or P.O.S software package. To
text data integrity. Being able to create "test" data is something
that many coders find of benefit.
