password not saving in outlook 2003 sp1

Im using windows 2003 server and outlook 2003 SP1. Even though i check the
"save this password" the password is saved.

When i searched the web i was pointed to various KB articles that explains
that the problem lies with the Protected Storage System Provider registry
key. This solution does not work on windows 2003 server. When I enters the
password after having cleaned and set up the registry, the new key thats
created gets the wrong permissions anyway. (only the "system" account have
full controll, no other have).

The "allow inheritable permissions ..." is not checked for the sub key.

Am i missing somthing?

Two thoughts if you have followed the steps exactly on how to clear the
protected storage provider.

1) Create a new Outlook profile (don't copy the existing one) and see if the
new profile can save the account information

or

2) You have a corrupted user profile at the operating system level

Thank you for the reply.

I am fairly sure neither is the case. I recently got a new laptop and have
installed 2
os'es on that one, XP and 2003 server (diffrent partitions) On XP outlook
behaves,
on windows 2003 i got the same problem as i have on the desktop. It seems to
be a
2003 server spesific problem.

Some set the local/domain policy to not allow storage of credentials or .NET
passport?

Its obviously not the domain policy, since neither of the machines is member
of a domain, and i can get it to work on XP.

That leaves local, i looked in the local security settings, security options
and found :
nettwork access: do not allow storage of credentials or .Net passport for
nettwork authentication.
It is disabled

I gather disabled means that it IS allowed to store?

Did some more tests:

Sat the policy to enabled, removed the key's from the registry
rebooted and tried again. This time there was no checkbox.

Resat the policy, rebooted, started regedit, started outlook.
Before i got the password dialog box, i refreshed regedit.
The key was on its place again, i added everyone, full controll,
went back to outlook and put in the password/check to save.

This time something was saved in registry:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Protected Storage System
Provider\S-1-5-21-4157250767-701300831-2287554487-500\Data 2\Windows

Unfortantly, next time i started outlook, it still asked for password :(

Have you tried creating a new mail profile or user id on the box in
question? I know you said neither should be the case, but there are times
that you have to try this to rule out minor registry corruption in the HKCU
section.
