Outlook 2003/2007 won't save password

I was using Outlook 2003, but started having a problem with my email password
being saved. I went to the Microsoft website for help and tried all the
resolutions of KB290684. Tried to create new profiles, run in safe mode, and
delete registry key. No luck on any.

I upgraded to Office 2007, in hopes that this would solve my problem, but I
have the same issue. So now, I have Outlook 2007 and it will not save my
password.

I believe this may be a OS issue as having the same issue with an RDP
connection.

Looking for any help.

Are you running an AntiVirus application setup to scan your email? Failure
to save passwords is a fairly common symptom associated with an A/V
application doing email scanning that has developed a name cache problem.

I don't have AV with email scan. it did give me the idea to unload the
service and also to turn off my firewall to see if that made a difference.
Same result.

Are there any other registry changes I might try to resolve this issue?

thanks

What version of Windows do you use?

Deleting the protected storage key should fix it - that is the only key I
know of that will affect it. But you need to delete the entire key, removing
all saved passwords on the computer, not just the one for outlook.

I did delete the entire key. I rebooted then tried Outlook again and same
issue. the key was recreated, as would be expected. I am running XP
professional. this was happening with SP2, and I did go ahead and install
SP3 in hopes that it might correct it, but get same result.

The Microsoft solution does not work for many. After diligently serching, I found the following works: Check registry for:
"HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\User
Shell Folders\AppData" If the key is missing, you have to add a new registry key. Leave the Local AppData Key unaltered. You have to create a new Expandable String Value called "AppData" with the data value "%userprofile%\Application Data". This solved the problem for me. Hope it works for you. - Deacon Gray (JgrayCPA1)

What pozzles me about the rash of postings about this issue is what's
causing it in the first place. Normally Windows creates that registry key
when the Windows user profile gets created.
