PARTITION SIZE FOR xP AND VISTA

A

Andy

Primary Partition (1 - 2 GB): Boot files for XP and Vista; hardware
drivers for XP and Vista
Extended Partition (Rest of drive)
Logical Volume: Windows XP
Logical Volume: Vista
Logical Volume: Other stuff
etc.

This allows you to reformat a Windows partition without wiping out the
dual boot files. Storing the latest drivers in the primary partition
makes it easy to install them when needed, since you know exactly
where they are.

Thanks to Ken for the "backup" advice.
Andy:
When I load Xp could you explain briefly how to set up a primary partition
with just the boot files separate from the logical volume with full Xp or
Vista on it.
I've read tutorals on it but am still somewhat confused. I don't want to
screw it up and have to re-do it.
Thanks

Run Setup by booting from the Windows XP CD.
The first partition that you create is the primary partition.
The second partition that you create creates the extended partition
plus the first logical volume within it.
Subsequent partitions that you create are additional logical volumes
within the extended partition.
Pick the first logical volume to install Windows XP.
You will be allowed to format the logical volume.
You will then be allowed to format the primary partition.
Installation proceeds.
Caveat: in order for the extended partition to encompass the entire
250GB disk, the Windows XP CD must incorporate SP1 or SP2 to enable
access past the 137GB boundary.

If your Windows XP CD does not incorporate SP1, you can connect the
drive as slave in another computer, and use Disk Management to
partition and format the drive. Then when you connect the drive in the
subject computer the disk is partitioned, formatted, and ready to go.

Thanks again JS (and Ken) for the helpfull advice.
Now if I can just pull it off when I format and do a "clean install" of Xp.
I've decided to use 40 gigs each for the boot drives for Xp and future Vista
and the rest for an extended partition with logical drives for data/
media/etc.

Thanks Andy, makes sense.
I didn't see your response at first as I am still not sure how this forum
works. You can respond to each individual post but I kept looking at the end
of the list for the latest.
