partition question

I have this setup.

All are Primary partitions
All are Fat32
1 windows xp
2 windows 98se
3 Shared no operating system
4 Backup no operating system.

Windows xp sp2 recognizes fat32 with no problem.
I have tried changing partition 3 to ntfs. It did change it.
However, after a reboot windows xp sp2 could not recognize it and the
drive was not hidden by my boot manager. So what happened? (I
restored from backup)

Since I will have 98 on another computer. Here is the setup I would
like
1 windows xp-ntfs
2 backup-ntfs*

I know Nortons Ghost 2003 can write to ntfs system.

You can convert your system partition to NTFS safely, but read here beofre
doing so:

Is the device visible under Disk Management in Xp?

What 'boot manager' do you use, and is it being confused with the changes in
disk configuration?
