Whilst uninstalling quicktime the system crashed and would not complete the
process. Now I am unable to complete the uninstallation and also unable to
install a more recent version of the programme. Due to another problem I am
also unable to use system restore. I tried downloading the quicktime codec
and ignoring the problem, but it crashes every time I use it. I'm left with a
computer unable to play quicktime files and I have no idea how to fix the
problem.

At the command prompt, type chkdsk /f and say yes when it asks you a
question. Then reboot your machine. Something may be wrong with the file
system and chkdsk should be able to fix it. You should then be able to run
System Restore and fix the rest of your issue from there.

That didn't work, but I seem to have found a solution. I backed up my
registry and then removed all references to quicktime manually. This has
allowed me to install quicktime alternative, though it does seem to be a
rather messy solution.
