I have a windows xp how do i read an attachment that
shows a paper clip icon

Double-click on it. Or better still right click do a save as then check for
viruses.

However, Ken should note that whether he will be able to read it
will still depend on what format it's in and whether he has
installed an appropriate program which can read that format.
