compatibility view not working

someone

I read online newspapers (Guardian, Telegraph, Independent,
etc.) and their articles often have readers' comments
underneath. I used to be able to see all the comments in
all papers, and then only in the Guardian but not the
Telegraph, but now whichever paper I read I can't see any
comments at all, they have disappeared. This seems to be
something to do with a "compatibility problem". I am
running IE8 with Win XP.

So I looked under Tools > Compatibility View and >
Compatibility View Settings. Compatibility View is greyed
out completely, and Compatibility View has only the name of
the paper I'm looking at.

Then again, a bit later, Compatibility View is not greyed
out, and the newspaper name is shown.

Sometimes I can see the comments from a paper, sometimes
not.

Does anybody know how the Compatibility View settings work
so that I can see the comments all the time?

Thanks for any help with this very frustrating problem.

Maybe you're using a 'hosts' file or other means of blocking ads or
tracking on web pages. Many sites won't show you all their content if
you choose to block some of their other content.

Discus does this when it detects older versions of
browsers.

I have an old copy of Firefox, and a newer version of
Seamonkey, and Discus comments show up on the Seamonkey
browser, but not on the Firefox one. Another difference
in my setup, is Firefox has no Adobe Flash plugin installed,
while Seamonkey does. And these things can be probed
by websites, to determine what content is shown.

*******

The funniest part of this, is many sites complain that
my Firefox is "not storing cookies". And yet cookie
storage is turned on. It would seem that the sites
seek to use Evercookie concepts, and it is the lack
of the other cookie storage methods, that triggers
the message. My old browser does store cookies just
fine, but the Web monkey code used determines
otherwise.

(Codified browser abuse... Fun to test how exposed
your setup is. My old Firefox is almost bulletproof,
because about all it supports, is conventional cookies.
A more modern browser, is full of holes.)

Newer browsers support HTML5, and the HTML5 subsystem,
has its own disk space for HTML5 cookies.

Cookies are used for tracking. Enough Google and Facebook
widgets exist on each independent web site, that those
two can keep a rather complete picture of your interests.
Even if they don't know your name, they can still
prepare targeted advertising if you get near them.
In many ways, their behavior is reminiscent of the NSA.

On one of my more "exposed" browsers, I use this one.
I don't really obsess over this stuff, and I'm sure
some of my browsers still "leak badly".

Thanks for all your comments. I do use an ad blocker for
ads, and I delete cookies, so that could be one answer to my
problem. Also I use IE as my browser so I think I will
consider switching to something like Firefox and see how
that goes.

Your suggestions and pointers are much appreciated, at least
I know where to look now.
