Ventura Publisher 4.1.1 Not Working in XP

Randy

Ventura Publisher 4.1.1 does not launch XP, even with
Windows 95 compatibility mode enabled. VP 4.1.1, which I
consider to be a very stable product, despite its age,
runs really fast on our Win 95 OSR2 system and has been
reliable for all of our projects that require its power.

We are installing two new HP systems with XP preloaded and
VP4.1.1 doesn't even get off the ground. Other programs in
the VP directory run fine. This is most baffling.

I have received comments from others with the same
problem. This appears to be an XP issue as it is supposed
to support programs that run under Win 95.

Any help out there?

Have you looked for the manufacturer of Ventura Publisher and asked
them? Perhaps their website might be a starting point?

Just to add to what Cari said (and yes, of course the first place you
should go for help is to the software mftr.'s tech support): you are
mistaken in that XP is "supposed to support programs that run under
Win95". Windows XP is an entirely different operating system from
Windows 95. Yes, sometimes you can run programs designed for other
operating systems (Win9x, ME, DOS) on XP, but not always. If your
software has not been updated by its mftr. for XP and will not run in
Compatibility Mode (as apparently you have already tried), then you
must either 1) find other, newer software to do the job; or 2) keep
machines around running Win95. Understand, however, that the Win95
machines should not be allowed to access the Internet (and should be
isolated from other machines that do) because since Win95 is an
obsolete operating system, there are no security patches for it. Most
modern antivirus programs will not run on Win95, either, and you cannot
run a Windows operating system which has access to the outside world
without antivirus protection.
