I can't get page numbers. Went to view header/footer and clicked page
numbers but did not work. Went into View/master/slide master then went back
into view/headerfooter and clicked slide number but still not box or number.
Thanks

Go to View > Master > Slide Master. Then go to Format > Master Layout. Is
Slide Number checked? If not then check it and see if that does the trick.

I was working on a slide job for a client and we had used mixed masters at
the end of the job they asked for page numbers. i went into masters and added
page numbers but although each of the master layouts used had a page number
placement they didn't appear on the slides? do you think it was because more
than one master was used????? opinions please

Dumb question, but did you go into View Header & Footer and checkmark Footer
and Slide number?

How do I start numbering my slides, so that slide 3 appears is numberd slide 1?

Is there a way to do this in the master slide?

You can have it start numbering with any number, but it numbers from the
first slide onward. In other words, you wouldn't be able to do what you're
after, I'm afraid, at least not w/o manually numbering each slide.

I am having the same problem with Powerpoint 2003. I went in to "Master
Layout" and checked "slide number", but still can't get the slide numbers to
show. However, if I insert a new slide, they show up. But that's
impractical, because I have over 200 slides. Can anyone help? Thanks!

Hi Chris

Try going to Insert -> Slide Number -> tick 'slide number' -> Apply to All.
There is also a check box for 'Don't show on title slide' which will prevent
the slide number from appearing on any slides based on the Title Layout. If
the page number place holder has been deleted from the Master you will need
to add it back in by using the Master Layout dialogue that you already found
:)

Thanks, Lucy. I've tried those things and it still doesn't work. I wonder
if I'm running into a bug. It seems I've tried about everything. Any other
suggestions?
Thanks!

Do you have multiple masters in the file? You may need to add the slide
number placeholder to all of the masters.
