Page Numbering (Page X of Y)

I have a template where the first few pages consist of the cover page,
copyright material, toc, etc. I didn't want to number these pages as 1,
2, 3, etc. So I numbered them as i, ii, iii, etc, i.e. the roman style.
After these pages, when the actual chapters are supposed to start, I
changed the page number in the Headers and Footers toolbar to 1, 2, 3,
etc. So the chapter pages do start in this manner. But I wanted them to
be in the Page X of Y format. When I applied this option via the Insert
AutoText button, the page number Y comes out to be the total number of
pages, which includes the cover page, copyright material, toc, etc. I
donot want that, I want the count for Y to start from Page number 1,
i.e. Page 1 of 7, Page 2 of 7, etc. I hope I was clear in explaining my
problem.

Thanks in advance

Assuming your document is in two sections, one for the front matter and one
for the body, use a SECTIONPAGES field for the Y value, in place of the
current NUMPAGES field.

I tried using the SECTIONPAGES field for the Y value, which did bring
about the desired change, but not fully. You see I will be having
different chapters, and I have alloted a new section to each chapter.
As a result, the first chapter, if is of 2 pages, shows Page 1 of 2, on
the first page footer. Any workarounds?

Insert a bookmark that refers to the start of section 2. Then for your Y
value, use

{ = { Numpages } - {Pageref [Bookmark] } + 1 }

Since the page number at the start of Section 2 will be 1, I think what he
needs is a bookmark on the last page of the front matter, with the following
field:

{ = { NUMPAGES } - { PAGEREF [Bookmark] } }

Alternatively, instead of involving NUMPAGES at all, he could just use a
PAGEREF to a bookmark on the last page of the document.

You've got the right idea, but you need to divide the text into sections so
the X of Y numbering will consider Y as only the number of pages within that
section. In the Page Number - Format box, you must start at 1 for each
section.
