Page Numbering - {PAGE} Issues

I am using Word 2003 on Windows XP.

I am trying to locate instructions on how to begin numbering my document so
that page number 1 begins on my document's third page. Following a link in
an answer, I seem to have set something so that now everytime I try to use
the page numbering feature, I end up with {PAGE} showing. I don't want this
but now can't seem to "undo" it. My questions are:

1. How to get rid of {PAGE} so that it doesn't show up any more (in this or
any document).

2. How to begin page numbering my document so that 1 appears on the third
page of my document and numbers consecutively from there on.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions/solutions.

(1) Press Alt+F9 (or select the { PAGE } field and press Shift-F9)

(2) Insert a Section Break New Page at the end of your second page.
Create a header/footer in the new Section 2, and in the toobar that
appears when you're in the header/footer, unclick "Same as Previous"
and click the Format Page Number button, and set the Start At to 1.

Go back to the h/f of Section 1 and delete anything you don't need
(such as the { PAGE } field).

One more question . . . this did work as I indicated in my response below.
However, {PAGE} continues to show up in any document I have that has page
numbering. Shift + F9 does take care of the problem, but it shows up when I
open the same document in the future. It seems as if I unknowlingly have
this something up permanently - ?? Is there anyway to undo so that it
doesn't show in the future?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Make sure to have only one document (with fields in it) open, and then press
Alt+F9; this should "globally" hide the fields.

Isn't there an option somewhere for always showing field codes instead
of their contents? Maybe that got turned on somehow.

Thanks Stefan and Peter. Stefan's suggestion seems to have worked for me.
I've opened a few page-numbered documents and the {PAGE} issue appears like
it's kaput.

I appreciate the suggestions and help!

Alt+F9, or the "Field codes" option in Tools | Option, View tab, should do
just that (unlike Shift+F9, which applies only to the fields in the current
selection). But I suspect that it isn't really a "global" setting, meaning
that it might be possible to have different settings for different
documents. And the setting of the last open document in a session determines
what is written to the registry.
