Page Fault in IE

Running Win98SE. I get a page fault in module kernel32.dll or module
unknown when I go to Windows Update and try to select the downloads it
suggests from the left side menu. I get the same error in a very few other
places, such as the login button for eBay and MyYahoo and a few php script
buttons on a bulletin board I visit, but only a few at that site - for
example, I can post messages, but if I go to edit a previous message, the
save changes button page faults. These are very predictable, but I can
otherwise cruise the web for hours.

I have deleted IE, reinstalled. No change. I tried to reinstall win98SE
upgrade) but I get a registry error on first reboot. Odd, since scan reg
shows no problems. Before I start over, is there anything else I can do? I
need to retain Win98SE since my printer will not network under WinXP. I
suppose I could use Mozilla to browse - it shows no problems.

and use mozilla, much better to be secure and not getting
hit with every attack from scummy driveby downloads
continuously.
