faulting module msvcr71.dll error

I have a new dell laptop XPS with IE 6 that worked fine but lately when I am
on the internet or my I get a message that IE has encountered a problem and
has to shut down. If I go into the event manager I see the following message
"Faulting application iexplore.exe, version 6.0.2900.2180, faulting module
msvcr71.dll, version 7.10.3052.4, fault address 0x000017fb." next to the red
X error. Can anyone help?

If you do a search of your computer for that file - msvcr71.dll - you may
see you have multiple copies of it all over the place. I have 25. It's
used in a lot of programs. Your file may be missing or damaged. Try
replacing the one in your C:\Windows\System32 folder with another one with
the same version. It's also installed with NET Framework 1.1. Rename your
copy in the System32 folder with an .old extension, then install the NET
Framework 1.1 to see if it replaces it, or copy it from that folder into the
System32 folder.

If no joy....

This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware, Windows Defender and/or Spybot Search & Destroy
to remove it.

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -

Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the

I too have this problem and have a couple of questions noted in (?) below on
your instructions:

"Try replacing the one (? the file mcvcr71.dll?)in your C:\Windows\System32
folder with another one with the same version (haw do you find another
one-from the list in the search-where do you see the version?). It's also
installed with NET Framework 1.1. Rename (rename what?) your copy in the
System32 folder with an .old extension, then install the NET Framework 1.1 to
see if it replaces it, or copy it (It refers to what? the msvcr71.dll fiel?)
from that folder (the net framework 1.1folder?) into the System32 folder.

Jon,
I replaced the file and ..after much scaning removing and
re-installing-disabling add-ons and re-enabling without any luck, I updated
my adobe to the newest version 8.1 and IT WORKED!!!
-- Just wanted to thank you for all your suggestions and you help in
resolving this. Maybe this easy fix will help others when they search and
read this issue.
