Page Cannot Be Displayed Message

Suzi

After dialing up to the internet on my desktop, I can access a website
or two then I get a message saying the page cannot be displayed. Even
Microsoft Windows Update won't come up, however I still have a
connection to the internet. I've tried to disconnect and reconnect
but still no sites will come up.

I replaced the modem, the rj11 cord, had the phone company come in and
check the phone lines and phone jacks (all working properly). I
updated all the service packs, and my antivirus hasn't found any
viruses.

I use my laptop in my living room with no problems, so I plugged it
into the rj11 I use for my desktop and I have the same problem.
(Running XP Home on desktop and Win 98 on laptop).

I'm not an expert but know a little and have done what I can. This is
extremely frustrating. Any ideas? Thanks

Talk with your ISP about your DNS. It might be that the ones you have
in the dial connection are faulty. You can see them right-clicking on
the connection, going to networking, selecting the TCP/IP protocol,
clicking on properties.

Good luck

Try clearing the browser cache. From Internet Explorer, go to Tools /
Internet Options / General and delete the temporary internet files.
You might consider rebooting after that, too. With other browsers,
you'll have to refer to their help sections for clearing cache files.

This error arises after you have updated your system with all security
patches. The culprit file is wininet.dll and microsoft has confirmed
that this is a problem in the Microsoft products that are listed at the
beginning of article 821814.

The links are:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;821814

I suggest download this patch and try again:

Also read this article:

I have still not been able to fix my system despite following everything
from this/above information. I have resorted to "repair" my laptop from
original OS CD but now I need to reactivate the system (I didn't know
this) before I can use. I wasn't aware of this and now I am without a
proper system until Monday when M$ opens. I only want my data on a CD
before I reformat the HD.

Would you try for me whether you can get this site and let me know:

http://commerce.euro.dell.com/dells...=&pch=1&pn=-1&demo=&gc=&sbc=ukdhs&co=&b=43319

I wasn't able to on XP professional. I am currently using college
computer running Win2k professional.

Suzi, Is your problem with secure sites like logon type sites? If it is, open a Internet explorer window and click help, about Internet explorer. Check out the cipher strength. It should be 128-bit. I found mine was 0-bit, and when I did a search in the forum, found out that some of my dll files were corrupted or missing (mine were missing). I re-installed ie6 and I can finally get to the logon page of my website! I can't seem to find the link to give it to you since I restarted my computer, but the page with all the instructions is out there on the Microsoft site...somewher
