What is the difference between:

Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz, 512K 533 FSB Socket 478 Boxed Processor

and

Intel Pentium 4 2.66GHz, 512K 533 FSB Socket 478 Tray Processor

Hi, Boxed I believe would mean retail. Meaning it includes all the
packaging and reference materials.

Tray is OEM. Just the single processor, most of the time it comes w/o a
warranty and will cost less.

I suspect that the "boxed" processor is a retail box.
This usually has a heat sink and fan. Also, the warranty
is greater. "trayed" processors are those delivered to
OEM's (original equipment manufacturers). these guys buy
in quantity, no fan or heat sink and the warranty is much
shorter. You can buy either. however the price difference
for one of either is typically very small, so i suggest
you go w/the retail box. bill

What has this got to do with Windows XP? Post in a hardware group, such as
may be found on your ISP's server.

Although not mentioned, generally it's implied that a "Boxed" is the
retail version, comes with a heatsink and 3 year warranty through
Intel.

"Tray" version is OEM, no heatsink unless the vendor offers to include
one (assume not) and very short warranty provided only by vendor
(typically somewhere between 15 and 90 days).

Ummm dude alt.comp.HARDWARE would indicate a HARDWARE newsgroup.

Yep, but it seems that grandpa is posting to several groups regardless
of how relevant each is to the topic.

Boxed is the retail version, as supplied by Intel for fitting by the
end-user and includes CPU fitting instructions, a warranty and a heatsink
and fan. All in a box.

Tray version is the one Intel supply to PC builders and is just the CPU, no
instructions, no HSF and no warranty. Usually a lot cheaper. Called 'tray'
processor as they come in trays of <insert number here> and as such can be
bought more cheaply. They aren't sold (by Intel) seperately.

comes with a 3 year warranty.
The Tray processor is the bulk version and is JUST the CPU (no fan) and
comes with a one year warranty.

It doesn't have a 1-yr warranty, only what the vendor decides on.

Also a retail boxed one will include a cooling fan - the 'tray' one
probably won't
