overtype line with text

I have a form that has a line (Ctrl-U) across the page. When I use overtype
to type text on this line, the line end retreats back to the end of the text
and then I have to Ctrl-U to make the line go back to its original margin. I
have tried Shift-Enter and then tried to type but it does the same thing.
Can someone let me know how to do this? Thanks.

Ctrl+U before beginning to type, however, you should get the desired result
(more or less).
