Overtype selected text?

Hi all,

When I select some text in Word 2003 and start typing it deselects the text,
moves the cursor to its previous position and starts inserting the typed text.

Is there any way to make Word behave like very other application in history
and overtype the selected text?

And no, I don't want to have to switch to overtype mode at any time.

If you check the forum archives you'll find dozens of posts from people
wanting to switch OFF (or better yet, permanently disable) the infernal
overtype mode. You're the first person I've ever heard from who actually
likes it, let alone thinks it a normal feature like 'very other application
in history'. Still, each to their own. Press Insert or click the OVR in the
status bar.

For most other people in history, Word does by default overtype selected
text, unless the operator has turned off that option and then cops an
attitude when he/she can't figure out how to fix it. In Word, click on Tools
| Options | Edit | check the "Typing replaces selection" box | OK. And no,
you don't have to switch to overtype mode at any time unless you arbitrarily
change the default setting when you don't know what you're doing.
