Thanks Russ,
1) I searched for all files and folders named scanpst.exe and found one
under C:\Program Files\Common Files\System\MSMAPI\1033
2) I double clicked the file and reached a window asking me to browse to
my
pst file.
3) I did a search for all files named pst and found 3 or 4, but the big
one
was Outlook.pst so I selected that one.
4) The job ran for some time and announced that it had repairs to be done.
I
told it to do the repairs and it ran a gain for a while and said repairs
were
finished.
5) I opened Outlook and after taking pretty much the usual time to come
up,
it began recevieng e-mails at a furious pace. As I watched I could
recognize
that these were actual e-mails that were first received a little more than
a
year ago. As mails continued to arrive, the dates became more and more
recent. Ultimately iit caught up with the present.
6) I marked all the e-mails as read and declined a half dozen or so
read-receipt requests. Then I noticed that I had no inbox.
7) Currently in c:\Outlook I see four .pst files.
Outlook.pst
archinve.pst
MargeWare.pst
OutlookHotmail-00000004.pst
All four have current dates. I believe all four were present when I
launched
scanpst, but I can't absolutely swear to it.
Thanks again for your continued assistance.

Tell me what steps got you to this point and what happened along the way.
Tell me how many PST files you now have on your hard drive.

This got me back into Outlook. It appears that every e-mail I have ever
received, even those long deleted, has come back into a folder called
"Recovered Folder 8082". I no longer have a folder called "InBox", but
rather
all new mail also arrives in "Recovered Folder 8082", which is in
Folder
Lost
& Found.
Thanks, I'm glad to have Outlook working again. All my folders,
contacts,
tasks and calendar items appear to be working correctly. I usually keep
my
in
box pretty cleaned out, so it won't be a problem deleting all those old
e-mails.
Is there anything I should do to get an InBox folder again?
Thanks so much for your help!

Use the Inbox Repair Tool (scanpst.exe) to repair your Outlook Data
File
(PST file).

My system crashed and I had to reboot. When it came back up I tried
starting
Outlook and got the message: "Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook.
Unable
to open the Outlook window. The set of folders could not be opened.
The
server is not available. Contact your administrator if this
condition
persists."
I am not on a server. This is a laptop. I can reach the internet OK.
All
my
other files seem OK and my other programs all seem to run.
Twice I've tried rebooting, as that is often the magic answer here,
but
rebooting did not help.
Does anyone know what I need to do next?
Thanks!
