Outlook stopped working for no reason

N

Nathan Sokalski

I have Microsoft Office 2003 installed on my computer, including Outlook. Outlook stopped working for some unknown reason one day. Whenever I try to open Outlook, I see an error that says:

Cannot start Microsoft Office Outlook. Unable to open the Outlook window. The set of folders could not be opened.

This message shows up before I even try to do anything, so I have no idea what set of folders it is referring to. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling Office, but it did not make any difference. All the other Office 2003 components (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc.) work with no problem, so why isn't Outlook working correctly, and what can I do to fix it?

Not only do I not want to use Outlook for my email, but I can't change that
(or any other Outlook settings) because like I stated in my original
message, I see the error message (which is a modal dialog) before I even try
to do anything. When I click the OK button in the dialog, Outlook closes, so
I never really have a chance to do anything in Outlook. The only time the
Outlook window is visible is when the error message is being displayed, and
because it is a modal dialog, I cannot use Outlook during that time.

Is your pst files in their default location. Was it moved or did you delete them. By any chance did you install or try Office 2007 beforehand

You create the new mail profile using Control Panel->Mail Icon. Outlook need not be open to do this.

You default email is set in Internet Expolorer, Tools, Internet options,
Programs, not in Outlook. If you have Vista, just type Default Programs in
the start box.

As far as I know, all of my files are in their default locations, and were
not deleted. I did not install Office 2007 beforehand, although I did
recieve an update to Outlook Live, which was released after Office 2007 was
released, so I don't know if that caused any problems, although I don't see
Outlook Live listed in Add or Remove Programs.

I have my E-Mail program set to Hotmail, because I never planned or wanted
to use Outlook for my E-Mail. In fact, the only reason that I am installing
Outlook on my computer is so that I can synchronize my Pocket PC with my
Hotmail Contacts and Calendar, which requires ActiveSync and Outlook. Before
I purchased Microsoft Office, I had Outlook and ActiveSync installed on my
machine, and I was able to synchronize with no problem. However, after I
purchased and installed the other components of Office, I started recieving
the error mentioned in this thread when I try to open Outlook. Why am I
having this problem? Thanks.

Did this problem ever get solved? I have the same one now...have created a
new profile, new accounts, am using OL 2003 again (after many attempts w.
2007) but OL shuts down with the same error message as this post. scanpst
found errors but that didn't help. (see earlier post 'outlook 2007 worked for
10 days or so... - this is NOT a multi-post. I'm now having trouble with
2003!) I've uninstalled/reinstalled 2003 etc.
Please someone get me out of this purgatory!!!

You may have to run SCANPST multiple times. In fact, I'd run it until it
stops reporting errors or until it's run 4 or 5 times (after that it's
probably irreparable).

Your PST file may be unrecoverable, but let SCANPST have several goes at it
and maybe it'll work out.
