Outlook polling the HDD?

Since updating to Office 2003, when Outlook is open, I can
hear the HDD being constantly polled. But if I close OL,
the HDD sound stops. Any ideas?
 
Did you delete a lot of items from outlook? it may be compacting the pst...

OL archived last week as it said it was too full. but it
has been making this noise since upgrading 2 wks ago. It
should be done with the pst by now :)
