Outlook inbox files

I fear that I may have to reformat my hard drive and I'm making a list of
files to back up in the event that I have to pull the trigger.

I know that my contact information is in a file with a .pst extension (I
believe Outlook.pst). Will the contents of my inbox be contained in the same
file? If not, where and with what file extension will I find them?

Yes. (contacts, calendar, inbox, sent items, .etc are stored in the PST
file)
