Outlook hangs receiving mail

Outlook 2000, configured with Exchange service and SMTP service (Exchange
for internal use, and an ISP for external mail). The problem is that
Outlook is unable to receive mail when it first attempts a send/receive.

The initial receive cycle when Outlook starts seems to hang, and Outlook
stops responding. Ending task on Outlook once or twice usually gets the
issue solved for the day, but the same thing usually happens the next
morning. I have tried a few things, but am running out of options -- any
ideas would be appreciated.

Hi Greg, what's the chances our postings are 6 apart. I
would start with iliminating the external part first and
see if that works ok internally with 2000 then add the
external. Just a thought.

Yeah, we know it works when you take the external mail service out of the
picture, and just use the Exchange mailbox. The puzzling thing is that this
has been working for a long time, and just stopped a few weeks ago -- the
only that changed that I can think of is that I applied some MS security
patches to the OS.
