Outlook Exress 6 crashes on exit and remains in memory

Following a machine problem, I have reinstalled WinXP Prof SP2 and all my
programs on my machine, and have now the following problem which I cannot
solve. Outlook Express 6 works fine, but crashes on exit. Sometimes there is
a Windows message saying that Outlook Express has caused a problem and must
be closed, and invites me to send a report to Microsoft, but not always. But
always, Outlook Express remains in memory and cannot be restarted. To restart
it, I have first to go into the Task Manager and stop msimn.exe (the Outlook
Express executable). Then I can resart Outlook Express. In addition, when I
close Windows, after having gone through this process, I often get a message
saying that one or more of the Windows modules cannot be closed.

I have hunted through all the forums on the Internet and tried several fault
corrections, but so far with no result. For example, I have tried:
- delete the folders.dbx file, then restart Outlook Express
- delete my identity in the registry ( I am the only user in the machine)
this worked as long as there were no messages. But as soon as Outlook
Express read an incoming message the problem returned. So I do not think the
problem is related to my message data, complex though it is (It has not
changed since before the problem started).
- delete all my messages, and restart with an empty inbox
- reinstall IE7 and Outlook Express,
- repair Windows XP (it has already been reinstalled, together with all the
applications).
