caught a virus and had to reinstall xp from scratch, now downloading all the
software. I have mcafee but the virus got me anyway. Now my outlook express
will accept e-mail but I cannot send. I did change the port to 587 but that
does not seem to work this time???
Any advise out there???

It sounds as if you kept no record of accounts configuration data
for OE -- so you must experiment e.g.
on / General
-- Include/exclude this account
on / Server
-- Secure Authentication login (checked or not?)
-- Outgoing Server Authentication (Yes/No)
and so on . . . even including various ports (although
a phone call to your ISP will suffice for these.)

When you have debugged OK, it may help to save to file
all details of all config. settings (and your internet passwords)
for consultation or future reinstallation.

You need to post on the "microsoft.public.outlookexpress.general".
Also you do not indicate who your ISP is etc.
For starters you should contact your ISP and most likely they can resolve
your issue.

Very rarely does infection with a single virsus require reinstallation of
Windows. Almost always anti-virus software can be used to remove it.

I have mcafee but the virus got me anyway.

McAfee is the second worst anti-virus software available. Only Norton is
worse. I recommend that you switch to NOD32 is you are willing to pay a fee,
or Avast, if you want a free anti-virus program.

Yes. Contact your ISP to get instructions for what are the correct settings
to use in Outlook Express.
