outlook express spell checker

I just set up a new system running XP Home for my Brother in law. He noticed
after starting that there was no spell check when he composed an email in
outlook express. I searched around and found out that you needed to install
microsoft word or similar program. Now the spell check icon is accessible,
but when you try to use it, we get a message saying an error has occured when
trying to use spell check.

Any ideas?
