I am trying to get Outlook Express to send mail. I joined Lycos hoping that
it would work. I set Lycos up according to the help file on the web. I get
the error message; connection to server failed. I have in the incoming box;
PPO.mail.lycos.com and outgoing; smtp.mail.lycos.com. What am I during
wrong?

Thank you;
David

Double check your setup/config/settings, for one the incoming mail should be if you didn't mistype in your post:
pop.mail.lycos.com.
not
ppo.mail.lycos.mail

Also for the SMTP (outgoing mail) you need to have SMTP authentication enabled.

From Lycos help site:
Configuring Microsoft Outlook Express (IE 5 or higher for PC)

Outlook Express can connect to multiple POP email accounts. If you already have an existing account configured you do not have to change these settings. Here's how to configure your new account:
1.. From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
2.. Select the "Mail" tab.
3.. Click the "Add" button.
4.. From the Add menu, click "Mail."
5.. Type your full name in the "Display Name" box.
6.. Click "Next."
7.. In the Email Address box, type your email address.
8.. Under "My incoming mail server is a [ ] server" select "POP3" from the dropdown.
9.. Type "pop.mail.lycos.com" for the Incoming Mail (POP3, IMAP, or HTTP) server.
10.. Type "smtp.mail.lycos.com" for the Outgoing Mail (SMTP) server.
11.. Click "Next."
12.. In the Account Name box, type your entire Mail address.
13.. In the Password box, type your email password.
14.. If you want Outlook Express to remember your password, check the "Remember password" box.
15.. Do not check the boxes labeled "Log on using Secure Password Authentication (SPA)."
16.. Click "Next."
17.. Click "Finish."
To turn the SMTP authentication setting on, follow these steps:

1.. From the Tools menu, choose "Accounts."
2.. Select the "Mail" tab.
3.. Select the account labeled "pop.mail.lycos.com."
4.. Select the "Servers" tab.
5.. Check the box next to "My Server Requires Authentication."
6.. Click "OK."
