Outlook express - contact list gone - but address book still intact

Can't tell when this happened. No new software other than some Microsoft updates. No new
software whatsoever. No viruses.

The contact list says:

"There are no Contacts to display."

Yet, if I click on ADDRESS BOOK or do START -> RUN -> wab /a

The address book is still intact.

If I type an email address in a new email, the autocomplete finds said address book entry.

If I click on "Contact" in the contact pane (lower left), and add a new contact, it gets
added to address book but the contact list still shows empty.

Any suggestions?

Suggest posting in an OE group. This is not one. This newsgroup is for
support of Outlook 97, 98, 2000, 2002, 2003 and 2007 from the Office family
for Intel PCs. For Outlook Express (OE) support try posting in this
newsgroup:
news://msnews.microsoft.com.microsoft,public.windoes.inetexplorer.ie6_outlookexpress

If this group isn't carried on the news server that's carrying this group
try using msnews.microsoft.com (MS's public news server that's the source
for all the microsoft.public newsgroups).

Also a good source of Outlook Express info can be found here:
