Outlook Express and LAN/VPN

D

Don Leckie

Hi,

I have a cable connection with a small home LAN. I setup Outlook Express to
always use my LAN connection. (Account Properties window, Connection tab).
However, when I login to my company's VPN, Outlook Express automatically
starts using the VPN connection. My company blocks all eMail and newsgroups
because we can only use Outlook 2003 with Exchange Server.

In Windows 2000, Outlook Express always stayed connected to my LAN.

In Windows XP, how can I keep Outlook Express connected to my LAN? It's a
real pain having to logout of the VPN just to check my personal mail and
newsgroups.

Thank you,
Don Leckie

Hi,

I looked at the Connections tab that you reference below, but I don't see
anything that would make Outlook Express always use my LAN. My LAN and VPN
connections work fine. Just the Outlook Express problem. By the way, I
posted a similar problem in microsoft.public.windowsxp.messenger about MSN
Messenger 6.1.

Thank you,

Hi,

Outlook Express uses the VPN connection when I uncheck "Always connect
using...".

The status window during Send/Receive shows "Local Area Network" in the
connection column, but that's probably just copied from the account's
setting.

Thank you,
Don Leckie

Hi,

Follow these Windows XP instructions and Outlook Express will always use the
Local Area Network:

(1) Start > Connect To > VPN > Properties
(2) right click on VPN menu and select "Properties"
(3) VPN "Properties" window opens
(4) Select "Networking" tab
(5) select TCP/IP and click "Properties" button
(6) "TCP/IP Properties" window opens
(7) click "Advance" button
(8) "Advanced TCP/IP Settings" window opens
(9) select "General" tab
(10) uncheck 'Use default gateway on remote network"
