Outlook Express 6 imported into Outlook 2000 ?

Hi Everybody,

I would like to move from Outlook Express 6 to Outlook
2000 and tried to import all messages from OE 6.

However, I am getting an error message and suspect that OE
6 and Outlook 2000 are not compatible.

Can anybody confirm this ? I have looked in all Microsoft
knowledge databases / troubleshooting guides but can not
get any advice.

To which version of Outlook would I need to move to be
able to import my OE 6 messages / settings ?

Many thanks for your help.

They are certainly compatible. What is the EXACT error message? Have you
tried exporting from OE?

You can transfer all your mail from Outlook Express to
Outlook by exporting from Outlook Express. If you have
Outlook open before you start the export process, then the
transfer is simple and you will have the choice of the
Outlook Express folders you want to transfer.

It wont work the way you tried, ie import the files from
Outlook application.

Good Luck

Dear Rifleman and Wally,

I tried exporting from Outlook Express 6 into Outlook 2000
but the system crashed. I did it several times and it
happened every time. It may be just overloaded by the
amount of data in my OE.

Any other suggestions ? How much data can I export ?

Have you tried File-Folders-Compact All Folders in OE first? The only
limitation I can think of is that Outlook 2000 will NOT work with a pst that
is over 2GB of data. How big is your message store?

Hi Rifleman,

No, I have not yet tried to 'compact all folders'. What
will happen ? Can I 'un-compact' it again in Outlook ?

I checked the size of the folder that contains my OE
messages and it is 4.67 GB. If you say that 2 GB is the
max then maybe this is the reason.

All compacting does is to remove "Free" space in each folder that is left
when you delete a message. Try that first and see how much it reduces the
message store by.
Is the 4.7 GB just mail or does that include News? If it is just mail then I
would say almost certainly that is the reason. The answer is to create new
OE identities and import some folders into each one so that the size of the
separate Identity message stores are less than 2 GB. In fact you ought to
make sure they are not more than about 1.5 GB just to be on the safe
side. You will then have to import each identity into OE separately, and then
immediately create an archive pst before importing the next identity to get
over the 2 GB limit......
