Outlook delays

I'm using Outlook 2003 SP3 as part of the Office suite. In the last 2 months I've noticed that it is starting to take ages to download my mail. I have a 1.5 meg pipe so speed isn't a problem, and I keep the files archived so that there is never more than 200 messages in any of my mail files - probably no more than 800 messages in all of my inboxes combined. I have 6 email addresses only, on 2 mail servers. When I click on send/receive or when Outlook initially starts up the hard disk light comes on and stays on for what seems a really long time and then finally connects with my mail servers. This has never been a problem before about 2 months ago and I've been using Outlook for years. Could it be that the archive files are now too big and need moving in order to start new ones? I'm puzzled and any help wpould be really welcome..

It's highly unlikely to be the size of your mail files. Sounds more like an
update caused it - possibly to either windows, antivirus, or firewall. The
6 accounts on two servers makes it worse because outlook makes a limited
number of connections to each server at once.

Are you scanning email with antivirus? That's overkill as long as you have
it set on 'autoprotect' and it will cause issues like this.
