error during Archive in Outlook 2003 - Exchange 2003 server

Hello,

Currently we use Outlook for archival of mail, looking to get a network
archival to manage mailboxes across the LAN.

I have Outlook 2003 set for the default archival --- run every 14 days. For
people that don't need to retain mail the archival deletes mail greater than
6 months. Others that need mail retention, anything over 6 months in the
mailbox is archived to a server on my LAN. I know MS does not support pst
files over a network --- but I can not rely on the users to archive/manage
their mailbox, and --- the pst files must be backed up, can't sit on their
desktop, so it does to a server of mine.

Today I got the following error while my archival was running --- I run
Outlook 2003 SP3 since 2003 - yet it mentions a lower version ?. It does
create a pst file, can anyone help with this error below my name/how to fix ?

Thanks,
Bob

Error while archiving folder "IPM_SUBTREE" in store "Mailbox - IT - Bob" You
are attempting to archive your data to a Microsoft Outlook 97-2002 Personal
Folders File (.pst) which is a non-Unicode data file. To preserve
multilingual data, you must choose a Unicode data file, such as the Microsoft
Office Outlook Personal Folders File (.pst). See Help for more information.

You do realize, don't you, that even with a PST on a network share, the backup
cannot succeed if they leave Outlook open. Do you also realize that you risk
losing people's PSTs by hosting them on a network share? What good is a
backup of a corrupt PST? Instead of starting Outlook directly, create a batch
job that first copies the PST(s) to a network share and then runs the Outlook
image. Use a shortcut to that batch job as Outlook's startup and leave the
PST on your hard drive. The PST on the network share will then be a part of
the backup.

Your archive PST must be an ANSI-format PST and you have Unicode data in your
main folders. In Outlook, right-click the root of your archive PST, choose
Properties, and click Advanced. If the Format field mentions "97-2002",
that's the problem. Create a new archive PST in the Unicode format.
