Outlook automatically attaching "ATT00nnn.htm" file - why.

J

Jeff

When I send an email WITHOUT putting any attachments on it... then go into
my sent emails folder the email I just sent has an attachement on it... the
attachment is different every time... but is ATT00nnn.htm where nnn is a
numeric.

I have run the attachement through a Norton anti-v scan and it did not find
any problem.

What's going on? What is the attachment and why is it being added?

Thanks !
Jeff

Jeff

I have a bit more information to add to my original post... the email that
arrives at the final destination does not have the attachment (even though
that exact email shows up in my sent email folder with the attachment).

When I send an email to myself... the attachment shows up in the sent email
folder AND in the email I receive from myself.

Some, but not all, emails that I receive from others have the attachment.

If I forward an email that doesn't have the attachment... then all is fine
(no attachment in my sent mail folder... no attachment on the email that is
received by the recipient).

I have updated and run my anit-v software, and I have looked at the email
options for *anything*... I haven't found *anything*.

I am totally confused by this...
I know it is confusing, but I would truly appreciate any help you can offer.

Thanks,
Jeff.

Roady...

I am using HTML...

One other thing I noticed... I recieved an email with that attachment but I
haven't opened that attachment... I don't know what that may mean?

Thanks you,
Jeff

Jeff

Roady... I just changed it to Plain Text and the attachment is not being
added (in other words it seems to have *fixed* the problem).

So do you know what has happened? Do I still have a problem?

Thank you VERY MUCH Roady...
I know *a bit* about computers but this had me stumped,
I really appreciate your help.

Thanks again,
Jeff

Plain Text probably didn't solved the problem and is probably not the way to
go (unless you don't like sending a formatted e-mail every now and then).
Change it back to HTML and try again. Also do you use Word or Outlook as
e-mail editor?

I changed it back and the attachment started showing up as before. I use the
e-mail editor.

Still stumped :-(.

I'm not sure what "what mail server do you use?" means. I think the answer
is Outlook Express 6. If that's not a proper answer... where do I look to
find out what my mail server is (or what is an example of one, maybe that'll
help me know what mine is)?

I don't think I am using headers or footers (read as, I don't even know how
so probably not). I looked in OE help and couldn't find anything about
headers or footers.

If that's not the information you were wanting from me I'll try and figure
it out and let you know.

Thank you Diane,
Jeff

The Dell support email response I got about this problem says I should
reinstall IE and OE to fix this problem... PLEASE tell me that there is
something else I can do to fix this problem. That seems like a last possible
thing to try (esp since I'm not mr computer wizard... looking through the
steps {and dangers} has me trembling :-/).

Thanks,
Jeff.

It's not what I wanted but it tells me what I need to know. :) You're using
Outlook Express, not Outlook, so we can rule out problems with Wordmail,
headers and footers added by word mail and probably problems caused by using
certain corporate mail servers.

i'm not familiar with outlook express enough to know what would cause the
attachments (this forum is for Outlook) - see if there is anything at
www.tomsterdam.com or try the OE newsgroup:

reinstalling IE/OE isn't a big deal - I'd try detect and repair first,
unless you've already tried that. I would also try Google to see if there
are other solutions or if a reinstall fixes it, since many support sites
recommend a reinstall for everything and it doesn't actually help at all.

Thanks Diane... I have just posted to the oe6 ng you suggested (though I'd
still REALLY appreciate any input people here might have). I had tried
finding something out via Google before I posted here and wasn't able to
come up with anything.

I guess I have to read more closely... I didn't see how to just do the
repair (unless that is "sfc /scannow" which I ran and it blipped something
to fast to see)... without the reinstall.

Are you sure reinstalling is a big deal ;-) :-/... it talks about backing up
the registry and maybe losing data and and and... oh, its really scary to
me.

Thanks from Jeff

reinstalling just IE and OE is not a big deal - reinstalling Windows is. I
hope they didn't tell you to do windows... <g> The problem with reinstalling
is that sometimes it fixes the problem - and other times it doesn't. When a
reinstall does fix it, sometimes you coulda fixed it faster another way,
other times a reinstall is the easy way...

But... for your problem, I have no idea what the cause is, so I don't know
if the easy fix is a reinstall of OE or if something else will fix it.

tomsterdam has backup instructions for your OE data - follow them as
insurance. You probably won;t need them, but it's better to be safe than
sorry...

Yes, well just like Diane I'm not really into Outlook Express to assist you.
If you found your anser in the Outlook Express newsgroup please post back
with the solution as I want to know it now as well. :)

In case you haven't found the OE newsgroup yet;

Diane, you are so nice :).

Thanks for all your thoughts.

You mention reinstalling OE... can I reinstall just that... or, as the DELL
guy said, do I have to do both IE and OE?

Another thought comes to mind. If it is not the OE software itself but
something goofed up with my personal XP acct part of it... could I just
delete OE from JEFFSACCT and reput that part back on? Or maybe I could just
create a _NEW_JEFFSACCT and get a new user view (I don't know what to call
it) of OE that way. I tried going into a GUEST acct and sending an email
using my same email address as the *from* address and it did not have the
attachment problem. Would either of these *solutions* seem like good or bad
options to you?

I really appreciate ALL of your help Diane,
Thanks,
Jeff

J

Jeff

Thank you Roady... I have not posted to the ng you mention here... I will.

And nope, I've had two replys from the other other ng I posted to (something
ending in wishlist) but they haven't led anywhere yet.

Sure, I'll post the answer here when (if :-/) I find one.

Thanks Roady,
Jeff

I think you'll need to reinstall both, but I could be wrong. I would prefer
to reinstall both though, since they are intertwined.

You mention sending from the guest account fixed it - you can create a
new_jeff account in your user logon - File, identities. If it corrects the
problem, you have something wrong with your main identity - possibly a
corrupt file. I would find and rename* Sent Items, delete outbox and drafts
and restart outlook. You may want to use Tools, Accounts, Maintenance to
compact the files and if you have Compact messages in the background
enabled, disable it. If that doesn't fix it, use the new identity. <g>

*you can rename Inbox or other dbx files as well. Use dbxtract to recover
the messages in those folders - it's linked from tomsterdam.com.

Thanks Diane for such thoughtful help. I have tried all these things. In a
few minutes I am going to post a summary of some of the things I've tried
and what happened.

I truely appreciate all your help.
Thanks, Jeff.
