How do I make Outlook my default mail program instead of OE.
I change the settings in IE-Tools-Internet options-Programs-Email
but everytime I reboot xp changes it to OutlookExpress.

Why? What am I doing wrong?

Open Outlook:

Make Outlook the default program for E-mail, Contacts, and Calendar
1.. On the Tools menu, click Options, and then click Other.
2.. Under General, select the Make Outlook the default program for E-mail,
Contacts, and Calendar check

right click Internet Explorer and select properties, then select the tab
called programs

change the email program to what you want then click APPLY

then

click OK

and your done

If you read the post correctly you'll see they already did that. I'm
assuming you are saying they have to click apply before ok in order for it
to stay. This is incorrect. OK and apply are the same thing and do the same
thing. They change the setting. Apply does it without closing the dialog box
and ok does it and closes the dialog box. Just wanted to clear that up and
make sure you weren't confused on how apply and ok work.

true, but this is the only way I have been able to get it to work myself, as
just clicking OK is not enough. but when I do APPLY then OK it does work,
don't ask why cos I don't know, all I know is that is how it should be done.

also this is the only way it works for everyone else that I know that has
had this problem.

out of interest how did you fix the problem Tomppa,?

Seems something is wrong with your office / outlook install then. You should
not have to click apply first. I would do a repair install of office /
outlook.

I never had this problem of the default email client not holding. Always
worked correctly for me. I've seen it in this group, but I never had a
machine that had that problem.
