Outlook 2007 will not start

Ron Boetger

Early this morning I booted my laptop and went to read my email. All
was well. I shutdown Outlook and then the computer. I came back to
my office at 11:00am and now Outlook will not start. It hangs at the
Outlook 2007 splash screen.

I checked for updates and installed the updates. still no good. I
inserted the Office CD and tried to run repair. It ran for at least
20 minutes before I killed it.

Any ideas how to get my Outlook going?

Open your Task Manager to see if Outlook.exe is still running in the
processes. If it is, kill it and then try to restart Outlook.
If that's not the issue, please post back.

Close Outlook. Find and rename outcmd.dat to .old. (If using Windows 2000 or XP, you will need to enable searching hidden and system folders.)

Once you have done so, reopen Outlook and it should open fine. You will need to rebuild any custom toolbars or customizations as the file outcmd.dat controls how the toolbars display. When it becomes corrupted, it will cause Outlook to hang because it cannot create the toolbars that you expect.

Hi,

I am having the same problem as the original poster. I tried renaming
outcmd.dat, as well as extend.dat and frmcache.dat as another post suggested,
but none of it has worked. Any other suggestions?

Yes, I did try creating a new profile and telling Outlook to use that profile
as default. However, I still had the same problem. I have all of the most
recent Office and Windows updates, and I ran Office Diagnostics which found
and fixed a problem with installation package 16, but Outlook still hangs.
By the way, I'm using Outlook with Business Contact Manager.

IS BCM in the new profile? I'm sure the problem is related to BCM but it
should work if you don't include BCM in the new profile.

I'm not sure if BCM is included in the new profile, but BCM works when
Outlook is in Safe Mode, so wouldn't that eliminate it as a problem?
Additionally, I'd like to find a solution to this problem without permanently
using a new profile, as I have many contacts and e-mails saved in this one.

what addins do you have installed? start in safe mode - go to tools, trust
center, addins.

Business Contact Manager for Outlook
Microsoft Exchange Unified Messaging
Microsoft Office SharePoint Server Colleague Import Add-In
Microsoft Outlook Mobile Service
Microsoft VBA for Outlook Admin
Windows Search Email Indexer

The following add-ins are installed but under "Manage COM Add-Ins" the box
next to them is not checked:

Bitdefender AntiSpam
Microsoft Access Outlook Add-in for Data Collection and Publishing

I'd start with the bitdefender addin and see if it works better... the
access one too (while you are in there), if you aren't using it.

I found the problem - the Windows Desktop Search add-in. Reinstalling
Windows Desktop Search fixed the problem.
