Outlook 2007 & Rules

Tim

Hi there,

Formated my HD and reinstalled Outlook 2007 imported my .pst file which
brings in my rules but they just don't work.

I've had this problem everytime I've done a format and reinstall so is there
a way of saving rules before I format my drive and then import them so that
they work. Or have I got to set up my rules evertime I reinstall Outlook?

Many thanks in advance for any help or pointers, Tim.

Importing is never the way to restore previous Outlook data.

Just reuse the PST. Add it as the delivery location with Control Panel's
Mail applet.

Hi there,

Sorry I didn't mean import the .pst file all I do is delete the new .pst
file created when I first open Outlook and then point Otlook when I resart
it to my original .pst file which I keep in a folder in My Documents.

The metadata for rules also contains the path for the PST. Since you've
change the path, the rules need to be regenerated with new metadata by
opening each and reselecting the folder.

Hi there,

Many thanks Brian that seems to make some sense but after a fresh install of
Outlook I have to start it up once as I can't use my original .pst file
until I've first opened and closed Outlook I then delete the new .pst file
which has no rules and then place my original .pst file where it always is,
My Docs/Outlook do not Delete so surely that sequence should not require
regeneration of the metadata?

Anyway what you suggest is what I have always had to do but at least now I
understand why.

Pity MS couldn't have kept the backup of outlook like they had in the 2003
version beacuse what with this issue and having to enter all my E-mail
details everytime I do a clean install it is a bit of a pain.

Anyway many thanks, Tim.

Completely untrue. Add the moved PST to the mail profile using the Mail
applet in Control Panel and make it your delivery location before ever
starting Outlook.
