Outlook 2007 not updating inbox read items

Strange one...

I have outlook 2007, on Vista Business, connecting to Exchange 2003 in SBS
2003.
This same system worked fine using Office 2003.
The emails update in the inbox fine, but when I read them they go from bold
to normal. I leave it 5 minutes and then all emails re-download and are all
bold again. If i have replied to any, the reply tag (the little arrow on the
envelope) does not show.
I have tried removing and re-creating the account to no avail.

any help would be appreciated...
