Outlook 2007 is slooooooowwwwww

I’ve been using most of the 2007 Beta products with little complaint (though
Word does print some documents incorrectly when headers and footers are
involved) and even enjoyment.

But my biggest complaint is Outlook 2007. It is not only as slow as
molasses, but it slows down my computer too.

I’ve set its priority to “Above Normal†in the Task Manager which helps a
little. But still, sometimes the cursor disappears while other times
everything freezes for a bit.

Is it possible to revert back to Outlook 2003 without losing my .pst file
which I assume was modified for 2007?

Does anyone know if Microsoft is addressing this problem in the immediate
future (with a bug fix in the next week or so)?

Have you downloaded the latest update to the beta? Mine was really slow with
the first beta but the recent update seems to have speeded it up a lot.

I have version 1 on my old laptop which grinds it to a halt, and the latest
upgrade on my pc which is slow.

I'm new to this. Is MVP an official or semi-official status?
I'm enquiring because of the fact that Outlook freezes whenever there is
incoming (or outgoing) mail. No doubt you are aware of this.
I have the the B2TR.
I have also turned off the virus scan of email as well as the preview pane.
Can you ask and find out if, and when, there will be a fix because it really
makes Outlook unusable to be interrupted whenever new mail arrives. Yes, one
could turn off the auto receive, but this problem didn't exist with 2003 so
why with 2007. I would appreciate someone acknowledging the problem and that
it is being addressed.
Is this discussion group just a user discussion forum? Or is there some
"official" microsoft information available here to answer these questions?

Hi Dan,

MVP is an official designation handed out by Microsoft. However, all
MVPs are volunteers, do not work for Microsoft and are just users of
Microsoft software like yourself.
As such, I don't know what Microsoft knows about your problem or not.
Before taking this to Microsoft though, why don't we try and
troubleshoot this here first? Most of the cases of performance problems,
crashes and freezes of Outlook 2007 are actually not Outlook's fault.
Have you tried running Outlook in safe mode? (Start, Run, "outlook
/safe"). If yes, does it freeze there as well?
Once you answer that question, we'll take the troubleshooting from
there.

I'm running into this one too. When Outlook is sending or receiving,
the computer slows WAY down and Firefox and IE tend to hang altogether.
This is extremely annoying over the course of a day. It did not do this
in the first beta, but started a couple of days ago when I downloaded
the beta refresh. Is there any way of fixing this?

I should have specified that I already tried that and it made no
difference. It still hangs while email is being sent or received.

I have two POP3 accounts I'm using in Outlook. I have a single rule
running which copies messages with a particular subject line to the
Junk E-mail folder. I have all default security settings. I do not run
any antivirus software that impacts Outlook. I run AVG on my PC but
have turned it off to see if it would help this problem. It hasn't made
a difference. I have a couple of Add-ins - the Windows Search Email
Indexer, iTunes Outlook Addin (I have no idea what it is) and other
than that, just the defaults.

Thanks for anything you can suggest to remedy this!

Just to add my 2 cents....

I have the latest build (Technical Refresh) - and Outlook 2007 is
SLLLLLOOOOOWWWWWW - sending or receiving, safe mode or not. It's been this
way since I installed the first BETA.

To answer your last q, my pst file is 1.0GB.
I, too, tried safe mode. No difference.
I turned off my AVG email scanner.

Outlook 2007 has operated this slowly from the beginning.
I do have the latest technical release installed.
OUtlook as it is is essentially unuseable because if you have alot of mail
coming and going all day, you can't afford all of the downtime waiting for
the mail to load into your machine. I ewven changed the setting to
automatically get mail to 10 minutes, whereas I have always heretofore had it
set at 5 minutes.
Not only does Outlook freeze when receiving and sending mail, but the length
of time it takes to send or receive a mail seems much longer.
When I asked earlier was Microsoft aware of this problem, I assumed they
must be because as I read through this discussion group, there are a tom of
people who are complaining about the same issue.

Thanks Patrick. I'm back and I see others have picked up this thread.
To answer your last q, my pst file is 1.0GB.
I, too, tried safe mode. No difference.
I turned off my AVG email scanner.
I also have the microsoft search desktop add-in.
Regards,

If you disable the iTunes add-in, does it get any better?
How big is your PST?

I have two POP3 accounts I'm using in Outlook. I have a single rule
running which copies messages with a particular subject line to the
Junk E-mail folder. I have all default security settings. I do not run
any antivirus software that impacts Outlook. I run AVG on my PC but
have turned it off to see if it would help this problem. It hasn't made
a difference. I have a couple of Add-ins - the Windows Search Email
Indexer, iTunes Outlook Addin (I have no idea what it is) and other
than that, just the defaults.

Thanks for anything you can suggest to remedy this!

I should have specified that I already tried that and it made no
difference. It still hangs while email is being sent or received.

RTM???
So is Microsoft aware of this problem w/Outlook 2007?

I don't know if they are. You'll have to wait and see.
